The short answer

Your rising sign, also called the ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place you were born. To find it you need your birth date, your birth time and your birth city. A free birth chart calculator does the rest.

Introduction

Maybe you have read your horoscope for years and felt it only half fit. Or someone asked "and what is your rising sign?" and you had no idea. You are not alone: most of us grow up knowing only our Sun sign.

The rising sign is the missing piece. Once you know it, many things in your chart, and in your forecasts, start to make more sense.

What the rising sign tells you

If your Sun sign is who you are at the core, your rising sign is the door you walk through. It describes your first reaction to life, the way you start things, and the impression people get before they really know you.

That is why two people with the same Sun sign can feel so different. A Taurus with Leo rising walks into a room very differently from a Taurus with Virgo rising.

The ascendant (ASC) sits on the left of the chart, where the first house begins.

Why your birth time matters so much

The Earth turns once a day, so all twelve signs pass over the eastern horizon in about 24 hours. That means the rising sign changes roughly every two hours, and sometimes faster. If you were born near the change, a few minutes can move you into a different sign.

Your Sun sign only depends on the date, and your Moon sign on the date and roughly the time of day. Your rising sign needs the exact time.

How to calculate yours, step by step

  1. Find your exact birth time. Look at your birth certificate or ask your family. Hospital records are usually more precise than memory.
  2. Open a free calculator. I gathered trusted ones on my birth chart page.
  3. Enter your date, time and city. The calculator adjusts for time zones and daylight saving time for you.
  4. Look for "ASC" or "Ascendant". The sign next to it is your rising sign. Note the signs of the Sun and the Moon too.

What if you don't know your birth time?

You can still know your Sun sign, and most of the time your Moon sign. For the rising sign, an astrologer can try to estimate your birth time from important dates in your life. This is called rectification. Until then, read for your Sun sign and leave the rising sign open.

Sun sign or rising sign: which one should you read?

Both. Many forecasts, including the ones in my yearbook Efemérides de lo invisible, are written so they work well with the rising sign. Read your Sun sign first, then your rising sign, and notice which one describes your year better. Often it is the rising sign.

In short

Your rising sign is the sign that was rising in the east when you were born. You need your exact birth time to know it, it takes two minutes to calculate, and it makes every forecast you read a little more yours.

Questions people ask

What is a rising sign?

Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place you were born.

Can I find my rising sign without my birth time?

Not reliably. It changes about every two hours, so you need your birth time. Without it you can still know your Sun sign and usually your Moon sign.

Is my rising sign more important than my Sun sign?

Neither is more important. The Sun describes your core. The rising sign describes how you meet the world. Reading both gives a fuller picture.

Should I read my horoscope for my Sun sign or my rising sign?

Read both. Forecasts often feel very accurate for the rising sign, so it is worth comparing.
